I haven't been on tumblr much today or yesterday and I see the Cuba thing is quite new but I don't know anything about what happened. Can you make a summary? I'd trust you more than google

A brief summary

Cuba is facing a crisis due to two factors:

• Usamerican imperialism and the embargo they are forcing on the Island

• the Cuban government being a dictatorship that has lasted and subdued for 62 years

Cuba has had for the last years two currencies, el Peso Cubano and the Dollar, but it kept many people afloat though still struggling. in the middle of the pandemic though the cuban government decided to change its currency to the dollar.

The government’s store with primary necessities only accepted dollar from a credit card, said credit card can’t be charged by the citizen and can only be charged by someone outside of the country. The peso cubano is still making its rounds, but it’s basically invaluable if you need to buy basic necessities. The prices have been raised dramatically, making a Tachipirina pack of 10 pills cost up to $150. Before this change in currency Cubans kept afloat alternating the two currencies.

During the pandemic cubans also had to come out and participate in las colas waiting for the government distributed food, which was often scarce or even non edible. This colas were often a breeding ground for covid contagions or heart attacks and faintings due to the hot sun.

When the Cuban population have tried to express it’s dissent to the conditions they were being subdued to they often were silenced with force, which is something that is not new. Many people during the Cuban dictatorship have been forcefully silenced or even jailed for simply criticizing the government, or protest against policies in Cuba. The government did not stop at just jailing people, protestors sometimes never came back.

I have already talked about this in this blog, but beef meat is illegal to own, buy or sell. If you are found doing one of these things you could get more than 10 years.

If someone is against the government and they are reported law enforcements force it’s citizens to do “Actos de Repudio” against that person, if you don’t you can get blackmailed by the police which of course is an extreme violation.

People can’t talk in Cuba about race or the discrepancy between the people, if you do you can be labeled as a oppositor and can be silenced by force. Until a few years ago the situation was even worse, and many Cuban activists have been jailed for pointing out their struggles.

If you are LGBT+ and you talk about the struggles you live as an LGBT person they will label you an oppositor, the only pride march that was allowed was Mariela Castro’s, Raúl’s daughter, but pride marches made by a regular Cubans often ends up in police brutality.

If a transgender child wants to switch their school uniform to the one of their gender they will be either forced to wear the school uniform that corresponds to their agab or they will be promptly kicked out, their parents would be blackmailed by law enforcements or the child might even face conversation therapy.

I am talking about all of this to show exactly how you can become an oppositor to the Cuban government without even being an oppositor, just criticizing the government’s flaws. People who say the Cuban people have elected them don’t know that Cuba has only ONE PARTY, el Partido Comunista Cubano lead currently by Raul Castro and Diaz-Canel.

Cuba’s governmentals often benefit on the backs of its population, doing things that to the regular Cuban are prohibited.

An example of this is during Los Apagones which is the government’s cut of electricity to “preserve energy” through ALL THE ISLAND, apart from their own quarters which are lit up even while the whole country is without electricity.

The avarege income for a cuban house is $6 dollars, the highest being $8, and when a Cuban starts to earn more than the government permits they will forcefully stop you from working.

The USA’s embargo has of course made everything worse, and unfortunately the conditions of all of this has rendered Cuba to starvation and a severe lack of access to medical service even with the covid emergencies.

All of this combined has culminated in the protests that started in San Antonio de los Baños and spread throughout all the island, protests against the government. The protests were at first pacific, but when law enforcement responded with violence (shooting people, abusing their power ecc.) the people retaliated, an they started looting government stores and spreading the food they could get their hands on and setting on fire police stores.

In the midst of this the government is breaking into houses and killing protesters or their family, enforcing children to participate in military uprising against protesters and is currently arresting the family of artists outside of Cuba who are speaking out in support of the protests, and have arrested and released the artist Yomil.

The USA wants to do a military intervention, but us Cubans URGE American citizens to call to lift the embargo, and discourage the intervention.

In the midst of all of this Raul Castro fled to Venezuela but Diaz-Canel is still in the island and they are still forcefully silencing the people.

This is what for now is happening, but there will be updates soon.

thanks for asking and thanks to anyone who is supporting us!

i am making a new account to step away from this one for a bit (not gonna deactivate just log off) and giving it only to my mutuals if you want it dm me but unless i know you well I will not be giving you my account

Small rant, I just can’t hold it in.

avalance-shoot:

Lisseth Chavez (Spooner) from LOT is literally the only NON-Cuban celebrity that I have seen speak out against what is happening to my Cuban people. I’m a first generation Cuban-American. I was born in Cali but both my parents, grandparents, etc were all born in Cuba and fled the communist government over 50 years ago.

I know I am an Avalance blog, but right now my people are DYING because they FINALLY, after 62 years of communism, spoke out against the regime and the fucking MEDIA IN THE UNITED STATES and several politicians are saying that this is the EMBARGO’S fault, or that they are protesting VACCINES?! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!?……NO.

Please, for the love of Bebo, don’t listen to these wankers and spread awareness to the truth.

We are using the hashtag #soscuba on Instagram, which Lisseth put on her stories, so thankful for her doing that, and you can read and see videos of Cubans screaming “Libertad” which translates to “Freedom” and some are graphic, but necessary to watch to understand that this has NOTHING to do with the United States being it’s fault. They are brutally killing folks left and right.

President Biden is considering intervening because this has turned into a humanitarian crisis, they’re not just murdering people for speaking up, they are murdering young boys too, and they do it in the streets to scare their parents into not protesting and shutting up…some get kidnapped in the middle of the night. So I hope something happens soon, I don’t know what we can do, but we are desperate for our families in Cuba and all the people there to get help.

while I agree with you post please do not justify an usamerican intervention. America ruins everything it touches, and if it touched Cuba it’s just going frok the pan to the BBQ.

I really desperately need other leftist to accept that white-lead dictatorships of multiracial countries are bad even if the people in charge of them call themselves communists and/or socialists. You can also acknowledge that right-wing propaganda about these countries exist without excusing or supporting limitations on freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of opinion, freedom of the press or the racial inequality and police-state tactics of these countries.

I am truly begging y'all to understand that white-lead dictatorships should not be your model for successful socialism and that supporting democracy, human rights and racial equality movements in countries currently/historically controlled by white-lead dictatorships is not being an anti-revolutionary.

(Yes this is about Cuba and also soviet union apologists)

also another good point I haven’t heard anyone tackle yet!

Gale, if you don’t mind me asking

Why shouldn’t Cuba be used as an example of socialism?

(I’m not saying I do)

To put it simply.

People often romanticize socialism.

And as such treat Cuba as this Socialist ideal. (I won’t name names but certain individuals that are prominent have done this and I refuse to support them).

Cuba is an AUTHORITARIAN COMMUNIST country. Saying it is just a socialist country does not accurately depict it and fools uninformed individuals what is actually happening.

That is what I am specifically referring to. Treating Cuba government as a good example in ANY regard.

The statement is to get people to stop romanticizing Cuba’s F***ed up regime.

Reconstructions made from the ancient skeletons found at archeological sites:

image

The Whitehawk Woman. She lived in England around 5,000 years ago and was buried with great care. She was also buried with a newborn infant, and died aged between 19 and 25 years old. Researchers believe she died during or very soon after childbirth. Her bones indicate she was otherwise in good health.

image

Adelasius Ebalchus. He lived in Switzerland 1,300 years ago, and was in his late teens/early twenties at the time of his death. His gravesite indicated he came from wealth, and his bones showed he was well-nourished. His bones also showed that Adelasius suffered a lingering infection; archeologists believe he most likely died from lung inflammation.

image

The Slonk Hill Man was found semi-crouched in a grave near the seaside town of Brighton, England — in the same area as the Whitehawk Woman. Their lives, however, were separated by nearly 3,000 years. The Slonk Hill Man lived during Britain’s Iron Age. The reconstruction artist (an archeologist and sculptor) described him as being “very good looking”, tall, muscular, and in robust health at the time of his death. There were no obvious signs of what caused his death.

image

The Wari Queen. She was found in 2012 by a Polish-Peruvian archeology team, entombed in an underground mausoleum in El Castillo de Huarmey, Peru. She lived approximately 1200 years ago and died in her sixties. Her bones indicate she led a leisurely life, and her decayed teeth indicate a diet high in sugar (most likely she regularly drank the sugary corn-based beer, chicha). Other artefacts in her chamber suggest she was an expert weaver — a very highly-valued craft.

I’m sorry to inform you but the Slonk Hill Man was killed for having illegal amounts of swagger.

genuinely the way ppl treat nudity is insane its literally just bodies

nudity is a completely normal fact of life. people have bodies and sometimes those bodies are naked. there is nothing inherently sexual about a body existing. if youre in a place thats been explicitly designated as somewhere people are naked (eg a changing room) you should probably expect that you will see naked people there. this is okay

nudity also isnt automatically dangerous or threatening to children. again they are bodies. children have these as well

yeah i get all that but there’s also this thing called decency and while there is nothing inherently sexual about a body existing, it’s nice to save a sliver of your integrity for the moments you actually want to be intimate with someone instead of giving the milk out for free ya feel me

how are you posting on the internet from 18th century europe

They have Twitter in Victorian England? News to me!

Fuck the Fourth of July. Pay Native people now. I’m an Apache two spirit man affected deeply by the pandemic and supporting a family. All reparations will be going directly to rent, bills, food & essentials (which we desperately need), clothes & baby items for the girls, new eyeglasses for myself, and car repairs. I don’t have a set amount but in light of the recent events (Indian residential schools) and also the ongoing genocide white people put us under, I think we deserve all the $$ people can spare, especially if you’re ‘celebrating’ in any way, shape, or form. Every white person should reblog this btw, thank you.

Pay up if you’re doing anything at all today tbh. I don’t care if it’s just free burgers and a pool party, there are Natives like myself worrying about keeping families housed and fed. I also don’t care if you think this comes off as aggressive—the US had/has over 395 residential schools and many of them are still in operation in various ways. Our suffering is not over and it doesn’t halt for a day so you can barbecue and cause environmental damage with your fireworks.

The 4th might be over but our suffering has been ongoing for more than 500 years. White people still need to be paying reparations and boosting indigenous donation posts & our voices, taking one day to do so is performative. Take this bank holiday to continue showing up and showing out for Natives. Hope everyone had a safe day yesterday 🤟🏼

We’ve got $500 in bills that need to be paid before Saturday July 10

$0/$500

Do it cowards! I just sent $30, because that’s all I can afford, but this needs your attention!

$60/$500 💛🤟🏼🧿

Anybody adding anything at all to this post that is unkind, bigoted, and/or stupid will be blocked ☺️

$100/$500 💛🤟🏼🧿

$150/$500 we are behind now on these bills so any help at all is deeply appreciated! 💛🤟🏼🧿

We need money to buy groceries, diapers, formula, and new bottles! Please boost!

Please help us eat, we have very little currently!

💛🤟🏼🧿

image

We still very much need to eat but this bill will be coming out and I don’t have enough to cover it, please boost!

$0/$197 💛🤟🏼🧿

July is disability awareness month but a lot of people tend to forget it :/ :/ :/

It’s all OK if you didn’t know, don’t feel bad about it, it’s a great occasion to listen to disabled people! We might not have pretty flags who will catch your attentions like during pride months, but we’re still here!

To clarify, now that I’ve looked it up, in the US at least July is specifically ADA Awareness Month. A great thing to do this month is look up laws surrounding pwd and our property.

Some examples:

  • Grabbing a mobility device (wheelchair, cane, walker, etc) without permission is assault.
  • Pushing someone’s wheelchair without permission is kidnapping.
  • Service dog teams are not required to carry any paperwork or certificates with them.

It’s also a good time to look at laws that need to be changed or better enforced:

  • People on disability income cannot get married without losing their benefits.
  • People on disability income cannot have more than $2000, including property value (my $300 mattress counts against it), which means they cannot save money if they don’t know about ABLE accounts.
  • Airlines habitually break the law by mistreating passengers’ wheelchairs.
  • Accessible construction is still considered an afterthought rather than a cornerstone of design. And no matter what construction companies say, it’s only more expensive to be accessible if you’re tearing up existing features to add ramps and such later, rather than doing it from the get-go.
  • Disabled people are routinely murdered by doctors who determine that they have no “quality of life” and are better off dead.

All these things disproportionately affect disabled people of color. Educate yourself, attend a virtual town hall meeting if you can, and bring these things up. Make things better.

SSA’s page on ABLE accounts is here for more info on that
